An automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) is a permanent electronic device that is implanted in a person’s chest to monitor an abnormally beating heart, whether it is beating too slowly (bradycardia), too fast (tachycardia), or irregularly (atrial fibrillation). AICD Procedure
An AICD is a permanent device used to help the heart treat abnormal heartbeats. The procedure for implanting an AICD is the same as that for a pacemaker. An AICD device consists of a generator and an electrode(s) or wire(s). The generator consists of a capacitor, a programmable software, a battery, and a computer chip or circuit with memory (RAM). The generator is usually implanted in the upper left side of the chest under the skin.
Electrode wires are connected to the generator and then passed through the vein into the right chambers of the heart. These wires usually lodge in the right ventricular septum. Besides being able to aid in proper control of the heart rhythm, the AICD is also able to collect and store data about the heart’s electrical activity for a cardiologist to perform. The difference between pacemakers and AICDs is that pacemakers are also available as temporary units and are usually used to correct bradycardia (slow heart rhythm), while AICDs are more often used as permanent safeguards against fatal arrhythmias.
