What is Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery?

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical procedure used to treat many types of neurological problems. It is particularly useful for treating the neurological symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other movement disorders.

The deep brain stimulation (DBS) system consists of four parts:

  • Leads : Thin, insulated cables that connect to electrodes in brain.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The procedure is done in two steps:

1. Brain Surgery:

  • The patient is secured in a special head frame to keep the head still during surgery. This is called a stereotactic head structure.
  • An MRI or CT scan of the brain is used to map the brain and determine the part of the brain where the electrodes will be placed.
  • Before surgery, local anesthesia is administered to numb the scalp area.
  • Electrodes are usually placed while the patient is awake and conscious to test the full effect of the stimulation. The brain has no pain receptors and therefore does not require anesthesia.
  • Sometimes the procedure can be performed under general anesthesia, in which the patient is sedated before the procedure.

  • A wire runs under the skin to a pulse generator or neurostimulator, which is implanted near the collarbone.
  • During the procedure, the brain is carefully monitored to ensure proper electrode placement.

2. Chest wall surgery:

  • The second part of the procedure involves placing a part of a device containing batteries, called a pulse generator, under the skin in the chest area near the collarbone.
  • This procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
  • Wires from electrodes in the brain are placed under the skin and sent to a pulse generator, which is powered by a battery.
  • The generator is programmed to send continuous electrical impulses to the brain.
  • The patient can control the generator and turn it on and off with a special remote control.
