ًWhat is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a viral disease that causes progressive liver damage, but more slowly than hepatitis B. This viral infection is usually transmitted by transfusion of infected blood, use of a contaminated syringe or blade, sexual contact, etc. Currently, there is no effective vaccine against the hepatitis C virus. Until now, the drugs used against the disease have not been very effective, so how more than 50% of patients after treatment of a viral disease relapse. But now, with a new generation of drugs recently available, the cure rate is reported to be over 95% and it is possible to stop the disease before it causes serious liver damage.

How is it diagnosed ?

If the HCV antibody test is positive, a nucleic acid test for HCV ribonucleic acid (RNA) is needed to confirm chronic infection and the need for treatment.

What is the treatment of Hepatitis C?

Patients are often advised for symptomatic treatment. Patients are advised to avoid alcohol or drugs that can further damage the liver. However, if the infection becomes chronic, hospitalization is recommended. Newer treatments include antiviral drugs that can cure most HCV infections because treatment is short (usually 12 weeks) and safe. In cases of cirrhosis with or without liver cancer, a liver transplant may be required.
