ًWhat is Liver Cirrhosis?

Liver Cirrhosis is a liver disease caused by permanent damage or scarring of the liver. Damage can be caused by various causes such as hepatitis, chronic alcoholism, fat accumulation, etc.

How is it diagnosed?

Generally, People with early-stage cirrhosis of the liver don’t have any symptoms. Most of the time, liver cirrhosis is first diagnosed through a routine blood test or checkup. For the confirmation of a diagnosis, some laboratory and imaging tests is generally done. Following tests should be done for diagnosis of a liver cirrhosis.

  • Laboratory tests. Hepatitis B (HbsAg), Hepatitis C (HCV antibody), Prothrombin Time and International Normalised Ratio (PT/INR)
  • Imaging tests. magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) or transient elastography for finding out any stiffening of the liver. Other imaging tests such as MRI, CT, and ultrasound may also be performed.
  • Liver biopsy

What is the treatment for it?

Its Treatment depends on the cause and extent of liver damage. The aims of treatment are to minimize the development of scar tissue in the liver and treat the symptoms and complications of it. If your liver is seriously damaged, you may need to be hospitalized. although, in advanced cases of cirrhosis, a liver transplant is required.
