Liver Transplant

What is liver transplant?

Liver transplantation or hepatic transplantation is a surgery in which replaces of a diseased liver with a whole or partial healthy liver from another person. Liver transplantation is a last treatment option for liver disease and acute liver failure.

Liver transplantation is the only treatment for liver failure because there is no device or technology that can permanently perform all liver functions. Depending on the source of the donor liver, liver transplantation can be performed in two ways

  1. Living donor liver transplant (LDLT)
  2. Deceased Donor (Cadaveric) Liver Transplant (DDLT)

Living donor liver transplant (LDLT)

A living-donor liver transplant is an operation in which part of the liver is removed from a healthy living person and transplanted into someone whose liver is no longer working properly.

within a few months after surgery the size, volume and capacity of the donor liver grows back and returns to its normal. In this case, the transplanted liver grows and restores liver function in the recipient.

Deceased Donor (Cadaveric) Liver Transplant (DDLT)

For patients who require a liver transplantation but do not have a living related donor, the option of deceased-donor liver transplantation (DDLT), colloquially known as cadaveric liver transplantation, is offered. Here, the organ is harvested from a brain-dead person after the consent of the family.
